St. Claire & Black Lakes
For my first couple of trout outing’s this year I chose a few Thurston County lakes to get back in form. St. Claire was the first one on my agenda. This is a lake that I have worked only one time and that was years ago. This seemed like it would be a good challenge and a great way to spend a few afternoon hours. Before I delve in on our adventure I would like to comment on the bank anglers here. I can’t say I have ever met a nicer bunch of guy’s anywhere. Not one of them tried to make it diffic...

Quincy Lakes Opener
This was a very special week for me. On Friday I picked up an F-150 pickup that Town Ford found for me. It has some great features, including a back up camera that makes hooking up the boat a breeze. It’s all logoed up, so when you see it on the road be sure to wave. The next day I picked up a brand new Kingfisher 2025 from Bob Feil Boats and Motors. The boat is fully equipped and my wife, Eileen, and I put it on the water Sunday morning and tried it out. Wow. What a ride. The F-150 pu...

Fish Lake Rainbows
This great weather continues to dominate the forecasts this fall. I hope that we get an announcement on our steelhead seasons soon, but it just doesn’t seem right to be fishing for steelhead in shirtsleeves! I had some fun this week, trying the fall fishing for rainbow at Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee. I also had a frustrating day trying to catch a big triploid at Rufus Woods Reservoir. My wife Eileen’s birthday wish was to go fishing at Fish Lake. It was a perfect fall day, with litt...

Lost Lake Update and Hercules Retires
After five years, over sixty lakes, some of them several times, numerous campgrounds, thousands of miles on the road, and thousands of hours on the water, Hercules has formally retired from the angling life. He plans on spending his golden years sleeping in, lounging in bed in the mornings and watching Animal Planet, taking walks to the pasture and visiting his horse friends, an occasional ride to the post office and the tackle shop. Hercules also plans on enjoying his office time on the comput...

Central Washington Heats Up
My road trip down to the lower Columbia River was great. I had the best weather ever for my visit to fish for spring salmon. I got to fish both at Drano Lake and off the mouth of the Wind River this time. The springer run is arriving very late this year, but there were enough fish around for fair to good fishing for the hundreds of anglers that turn out to try for this first salmon run of the year. I fished Drano Lake with Herb Good and his long-time friend Ed Iman. Traffic was the low...

Upper Columbia Trout and Spring Lakes
Once again, steelhead fishing is in the news. This time it is the announcement that the season has closed, prior to the hoped March 31 extension. Anglers had put their gear away last Sunday evening. It was great to get a few more days, though. Now on to spring fishing! My fishing buddy Rollie Schmitten and I had a great trip last week. We traveled north on the Columbia River, practically to the Canadian Border to Northport. This small town, about 30 miles north of Kettle Falls is rig...

Quincy Wildlife Area Trout Opener
The early trout opener in the Quincy Wildlife Area and the lakes near George was a great one. Anglers got limit numbers of rainbow at most all of the lakes. Over 400 anglers participated in the Quincy Tourism Association’s Tagged Trout Derby at Burke Lake, and it was a huge success. I stopped my Martha Lake on March 1st, the opening day of the early trout season and found the banks of this narrow and shallow lake lined with anglers. Martha Lake is consistently good every year, which is ...

March Trout Opener
This is the time of year that anglers put winter behind them and spring fishing begins. On March 1st several lakes in the Quincy Wildlife Area and a couple near the town of George open to fishing. The official start of trout season has begun. Thousands visit these lakes every year to shrug off the late winter blues and get on with the business of trout fishing in earnest. One of the most popular spots for this early opener is Martha Lake, which is just east of the town of George. This ...

Molson Ice Fishing Festival
I spent last weekend at the town of Molson, attending the 8th Annual Ice Fishing Festival, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. According to the sign on the road approaching Molson the population is 35. I think that everyone in town either participated in the event or helped out by volunteering for the many chores associated with such an event. This is a community effort, where everything from setting up the tables at the grange hall to preparing the food in the kitchen is done by cheerful...
