OFFUT

April 12, 2001

By Becky Pogue

Offut Lake, located 15 minutes SE of Olympia is open for fishing year round. Often referred to as "Thurston County's best kept secret", this 197 acre spring fed lake has a 5 MPH speed limit. Perfect for the bait or fly fisherman. Anglers are delighted with the abundance of Rainbow trout, bass, perch and bluegill. Spring and early summer are best for trout, try some power bait off the bottom or troll a Wedding Ring tipped with a night crawler, The spinies are prolific later in summer as the water warms up.

There is a WDFW boat launch located on the north shore. Parking is adequate. The ramp is good, concrete slaps, but the turn around space is limited and will require a couple back ups to turn around. The cove is well-sheltered from the wind.

Offut Lake Resort, on the SE end of the lake, is a rustic, but charming fishing resort, offering dock fishing, row boat, canoe and electric motor boat rental. (No gas motors.). Campsites, RV sites and cabins are available. The resort's General Store can provide anglers with fishing licenses, bait, tackle, munchies and fish stories. Boaters are welcome to tie up at the resort dock to come to the General Store. The net pens raise thousands of rainbow trout for release through the fishing season.

From Bob Johansen:

192 Acres Max. Depth - 25 feet Elev. 236 feet

Fish species include largemouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead catfish and planted rainbow trout.

Prime bass habitat includes lots of overhanging brush and trees, old logs and wood in the water, large pad fields and some private docks.

Public access is provided by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The access has limited but usually adequate parking space, pit toilets and a very good concrete block boat launching ramp. Look the ramp over before driving down to it. The turn around area is small for maneuvering a full sized tow vehicle and boat. You may want to back down to the ramp from the top.
