Mattoon lake is located just west of the town of Ellensburg, it is a fairly large lake and is home to some of the bigger fish in Kittitas County. There are many varieties of fish in the lake. The most predominant being rainbows, last November the game department stocked seventy-five 6-10 pound brute stock rainbows in Mattoon Lake. Mattoon is also home to some big browntrout as well, the game department only stocks a few each year, but theones that are in there usually range from 16-20 inches and I've seen bigger caught. The trick is to get them to bite, but isn't that the trick everywhere. Mattoon has a few bass and perch in it as well, those seem to have gotten in there though. But I have seen bass in the summertime up to five pounds in there. Mattoon is open all year round and with all of the fish the game department puts in there, the fishing never really slows down. The rainbows tend to average around 10-15 inches with occasional holdovers as well. It has a nice boat launch right when you drive into the lake, and a real nice dock to fish off of. Like I said, Mattoon is just west of Ellensburg and you can see the lake off to your left when you're driving into town on I-90 from Seattle. Tim Williams
