After taking the Grand Kids to Westport last Saturday for their first exposure to razor clamming and crabbing, I decided to stay close to home this weekend so my friend Joey and I hit Lake Ki for the first time in almost 2 years. On arriving, I was really surprised to see only about a half dozen boats on the water. Anchoring my canoe in the first of my "go to" spots we were both able to limit out in a couple of hours using Garlic Power Bait. Although these fish were not big, for "planters" they were quite chunky and scrappy. These were the first fish of the year for both of us as work, the weather, and family obligations have not given us much time to get out on the water and it felt good to feel that tug on the end of our lines.

After having to net one fish twice I discovered that my trout net had several holes in it which were probably caused by my using it to net a dozen or so Humpy's a two years ago. Since this year is another Humpy year, I guess I'm gonna have to go out and get me a real salmon net before they start showing up later this summer.

After my failure at Martha Lake decided to try my "go to" lake. This time I had my worms, but it did not seem to matter. Had lots of strikes but nothing stuck. Got one perch to the boat but got off. Fished from 8-11am. Most hits were on the pop gear and had a couple more on wedding rings tipped with worms. Also got a couple strikes on a flatfish.

Got to the lake around 9:00am. It was a later start but my buddy got off work at 7:00am, and 45 min drive there. We tried bait for a while like last trip, and got some hits, but no hook ups. While he stayed with bait, I switched over to a silver and green spoon and began casting. After about 15 minutes when I planned to switch to something different a violent jerk bent my 9foot stealhead pole tip all the way to the water! I lost the fish at the boat, and it was only about 13in, but man did it fight. The next 3 casts got a hook up every time. I managed to boat 2. After that we switched up and began trolling. The fish hit on a wedding ring, flat fish, and the spoon. After a couple hours with many more stirkes, and violent first hits we had our limits. All fish were about 12-13 inch, but the way the hit sure made it seem larger. The first strike would be hard, followed by some air time, an easy real to the boat, and with loose drags some line peeling once they realized what was going on. Another awesome day at lake Ki.

After a month of salmon on the Stilly, I needed to sit and relax. Also, my 6 yo has been asking to go out, so I pulled some worms and we headed to Ki. Anchored up in about 22' of water in the North East corner of the lake, we had great bites, nothing huge, but loads of fun. We probably would have caught bigger ones if we were deeper, but it was more an exercise in fun. I may try to get her out again later this week, if the weather holds.

Got fairly calm when I returned from Goodwin so I decided to go sit on the dock for a bit tonight. Had a couple light taps, but no takers. Fish are still jumping all over this lake! These are the nice pan fryers too, not the fightless triploids, oh well, I have time...May have to launch the boat next week?.
