Fishing Leaders

dude I am still looking for quantity not quality.I rather have a lot of smaller fish right now than a couple big fish.Biggest fish this summer was a 13lb steely on the cow on 10lb main line.

Yeah I got to admit that was one big hatchery hawg but seriously though, If I could fish during the week in canada I would probaly do a good amount of catching as well. Only places in western washington where you can catch a 20 lb hatchery is the cow, bogy, skook, sol duc, wynoochee and possibly the satsop.

Haha twas a beauty for sure, i live so close to the canadia waters gotta take advantage of their ability (as much as i hate giving canada a compliment) their ability to maintain good runs with broodstock programs. No matter how much they hate seeing me, an American, on the vedder. I get a lot of S**t on the river some days for being a "yankee" not gonna lie, especially the days where i outfish the bastards

Haha twas a beauty for sure, i live so close to the canadia waters gotta take advantage of their ability (as much as i hate giving canada a compliment) their ability to maintain good runs with broodstock programs. Nate-Don't be using that maxima flouro its baaaaaaaddd. seaguar and p line have the best flouro by far. just remember to wet your knots because flouro is somewhat brittle. Yo Danny just cuz u catch 18 lb slabs in the veezy don't mean u broke 20! remember the 20lber that jumped like 7 times in peach last year? unlandable. and if your not using flouro use maxima ultragreen its awesome. 10lb for normal and clear conditions. 12lb when its dirty or you need that little bit of extra oomph.

Wetting of all knots to prevent burning is a must. I too got talked into flouro leaders a few years back. I was talked into Berkly Vanish. I cannot recommend it at all. While fishing sockeye with a couple of children on board The fish snapped the leaders mid leader. 10# leader, 3-4 pound fish breaking it. No thank you. I do not like loosing fish. And, I really don't like seeing children loose them due to my poor choices. Flouro has its place I guess. Just not on my pole for now.

I've had one bad batch of Maxima, bought from OE, it just snapped about every 6 inches. Other than that one wheel of leader I've had no trouble with it. There may have been some of that lot floating around from the smaller shops that didn't send it back imediately. I must say though Seaguar is my favorite and I've had no problems with it at all. I think it's closest to it's rated breaking strength too. After a couple dips in the water flouro loses some of it's strength and gains a bit of stretch too. If you follow the rules when handling it, just like anything else, it works pretty darn good.

10 pounds is a little light for dodger fishing because of the drag with that tiny leader, no stretch and the dodgers holds the fish back, lots of shock pressure when they run, unless you wernt trolling and u were river fishing, then, shouldnt have broke, regardless tho, berkly... not the greatest, like i said, maxima is number 1, i run chamelion mainline, ultragreen leader, and i go seaguar for flouro 100% of the time like BODO said.

I started using 6lb vanish and flourocast for summer steelies and I have had only one break off and that was in the dark and it was a good double digit fish. Just have to baby the fish some times.

I had a spool of 8# maxima ultra green that was snapping every few feet...it had to be defective. Even after that when it comes to mono it is maxima ultra green or NOTHING!

for my mono it is Izor line, I have broken rod tip guides it is so strong.

Update Seaguar still held up better after wetting my knots, Maxima also did the job. Looks like I will be switching from back and forth from these two. Although leader is getting expensive, might just have to do spools. Last week..

that also happened with a spool i got recently, i thought my reel was broken and somehow creating abrasions but i think it was the line.

instead of 10lb fluoro maybe try 12 or 14/15 lb leader, mono is usually rated a few pounds higher than listed, so your 10 might be an 11 or 12 pound test, but seaguar rates its line to the bare minimum, thats why their line is very thin, their 10lb test is actually 9.5-10.5 lb test,thats why "extra tough" fishing lines are tough, they are thicker in diameter than the " extra limp" lines, so maybe step up your fluoro or use 12 lb maxima ultragreen for your leader, depending on water clarity

Satsop and wynoochee have some big boys in them last winter i got a 20 pounder out of the nocch
