bait cast reel

I have a problem with a Quantum bait caster. The drag will not stop line from striping off the reel. Even a lite pull on the line and the drag dosent hold by the way the drag is turned all the way tight:scratch: . If any one knows how to fix let me know how[huh] . Thanks for any info.

try turning it all the way in the other direction. I have an Okuma trolling real that I use for my leaded line, and it has this same problem. Its real touchy so I usually just thumb the drag, but you cant really do that if you are casting

The casting is fine' but when a fish is on I can't reel the fish in.

Are you using braided line?
If so, that could very well be your issue. I learned the hard way while in the middle of a fish fight that if the braided line is not fixed or loses its connection to your reel spool that it can just spin around the reel spool and look as though the whole reel is turning. An easy way to check this issue is to place your thumb onto the reel spool and pull line out. If the line spins on the reel spool while you’re holding it still that would mean that it’s not anchored. It’s time to strip the line off of the reel and re-anchor it. I’m looking forward to hearing what you find out. Good Luck!

You were dead on Big D Thanks. I never even looked at the spool while pulling the line out. This reel is 9 years old I got on sale at Auburn Marine in 01. I thought that fish had done her in. Thanks again. The HAWG HUNTER!

I was jsut reading an article on Tackle Tour about braid slip. Pretty common, it's quite slick you know.

Please correct me if I am wrong should I still use MONO before adding braid to a baitcasted I have an old I mean old cheap shakespear spelling may be off. I wanted to practice with in the back yard and on the local lake I have mono but I wanted to try with braided as I have this for a reel and can use the mono for leaders instead. also any help with setting the drag on this would be great New to fishing with a bait caster reel and plan on getting a couple from a local fisher this weekend also. to play with...

Just like was said in the thread, it is absolutely true about braided line sometimes slipping on your spool. It doesn't matter if it is a baitcaster or a spinning reel. But the problem will not show itself if you just add a littel mono or any other non braid on the spool first.

cool thanks for the reply Zi didn't want to spool something just to unspool it later. which I am getting good at I need to invest in extra spools for all my reels I know it will make my life easier also.

I put like two turns on the reel and stick on a piece of masking tape and finish winding it on. Never had a slip.

Just make sure you spool it tight. Always make sure you spool line on tight and youll have no problems. If you just put mono backing and you spool loose still youre screwed. First big fish or snag and the line is gonna sink in a few levels of line. Now its not a problem when you reel it up. But what happens first time you cast it past that point? It comes back at ya and birds nests. Easiest solution make sure its tight. I stick a dowl about 2 feet in my line hole. then have my kids step on the dowel lightly. I start to reel in and tell them harder or softer. I wanna set my drag hard as I can and make it just to the point where I can reel in. This will save headaches all the way around.

In regards to the original post, I as well have a probably w/ a Quantum baitcasting reel.
I believe its an '07 model year? Its a Tour Edition PT
My problem is after the cast.
I'll press the thumb bar down, cast, now the thumb bar will stay engaged therefore the clutch as well and has to be manually pressed back upward until it clicks to reel line.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Word on the street is that a fair amount have been known to do this,
Ive taken it apart numerous times to figure it out as well as greased and lubed parts.
But I usually forget to flip it back up and it makes a nasty clicking sound, but it always sounds and feels like its just barely slipping.

I've had no problem with mine. For the price of those reels I'd send it in and get it fixed.
