Just curious

How many of ya have used a spoon a spinner or a jig and hooked a fish anywhere other then a mouth? I can tell ya in over 30 years of fishing Ive done all the above and seen it done many times. Heck I seen bass attack a swim bait that has 2 treble hooks on it and get stuck everywhere but inside the mouth. Why is that never talked about negatively? Just curious thats all.

Yup, it's called 'foul hooked'. Happens often sometimes depending on what the fish are doing. Sometimes on any piticular day the fish just try to stun the bait instead of eating it. Then some days the fish are so far off in their attack that they miss and get snagged/foul hooked. Monday most of the fish I caught were snagged/foul hooked on the belly, under the chin or on the back or sides, whether it was a Bass or a perch, lots of perch this year, BIG ones too. Monday when I was using a Hulapopper the bait was sitting still and the fish missed it so far that it didn't even touch the lure.

Ok, I'm changing the 'snagging' to 'foul hooked' as it's a better term. :) Some people would think 'snagging' is always on purpose. 'snagged' would be the same as 'foul hooked' in this case. As in 'hooked outside the mouth'.

I have never foul hooked a silver but alot of pinks. You can snag with a jig spoon or spinner or fish it right and greatly reduce the amount of foul hooked fish.

Casting in front of a school of kings at the skok is hardly drift fishing. I believe long leaders is flossing fish but so is a short leader. Im convinced drift fishing is snagging in the mouth. I have never seen a fish chase down a corkie and yarn combo but have seen jigs spinners and spoons chased. Im not against drift fishing do it all the time. Just convinced they dont bite but flossed. Please proove me wrong and put my mind at ease lol

Do you all think that snagging a fish would carry a different connotation if it was called foul hooked. Foul hooking a fish is a very common occurrence. I could be wrong but the word snag sounds like an outside the mouth hook-up is intended. And even if intended, is that so bad? I understand that that is a popular way of fishing for those big rainbows in some Alaskan rivers. Guides will actually put an egg lure a few inches up the leader from the hook. Am I confused, misunderstanding or just not getting what all the hoopla is about? Just askin'.

Huge difference between foul hooking and snagging. But I dont see how you can call it foul hooked when the point is to snsg in the mouth lol. Am I getting you riled up pooh? Lol

Unless someone has some underwater footage this debate will go on forever. As a person that has caught steelhead drifting corkies my responce would be "you prove it". They all felt like bites to me. Here we go with round "x" of the great flossing debate. Hang on to your hats.

I've caughten carp, bass, and tilapia on jigs- in the tail before.
Salmon- ive caughten them in the belly/tail- on jigs.
Theres a member on this site who was tellin me that hes caughten a king on the skok in the belly while driftin eggs under a bobber. I dont care what people think of the way I fish-hey i catch fish in the mouth thats all I care. I get fish in the belly-gill plate-and tail just like every body else.
If theres 100 fish in the spot your fishing in front of you- they hit it you miss, theres a good chance when you set the hook you will foul hook another fish. I
~Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.

~My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.

Steelhead are hungry when they are in the rivers, salmon bite on aggression not to eat.

Multiple species, trout, bass, sunfish, perch and yes salmon. It happens trolling, casting lures, drift fishing, bobber fishing, ice fishing, pretty much any method where the tip of the hook is exposed. All fish species "slap" a bait from time to time and get hooked. SO, if you've never caught a fish other than the hook being neatly hooked from INSIDE the mouth you either don't fish much or maybe you just use power bait for trout. Scratch that one, yep, I've caught trout with power bait, outside of the mouth also.

It's all good, let em go or keep em as long as it's legal to do so, hook in the head or whatever the reg states specifically. It's fishin! Have some fun and don't let the next guy ruin your day........

Ok one thing people need to STOP SAYING IS THAT SALMON DONT BITE OUR OF HUNGER IN THE RIVER AND THAT ITS AGGRESSION!!! This flossing snagging thing is stupid for one, if your not purposly flossing or snagging, then your fish most likely took the gear u thought they would. Like a spoon or eggs or corkie yarn. Sometimes their flossed on accident but who cares. But seriously on to another topic. I HAVE HAD CHINOOK, COHO, SOCKEYE, PINKS all take a hook SO FAR down in their throat that all i can see is my line in their gullet. Kings EAT eggs in the river. I fish for spring chinook in the cowlitz backtrolling a fricken HERRING cutplug. They are NOT biting a herring out of aggression. You put something that smells good infront of a salmon that is fresh from the salt. they bite because they WANNA EAT. Ill take pictures of throat shot kings this year, and show you how far they take the herring down while backtrolling.

-TAP5X0hqeE

HERE LOOK AT THIS VIDEO> you watch this and tell me that these chinook are not HELLA HUNGRY FOR THOSE EGGS. Thats not an aggressive bite, thats a "im a lazy king and i wanna swallow a fist size clump of tasty eggs" Bite
