The Dreaded Threaded

Postby fishnislife » Wed Mar 19, 2008 9:42 pm

Here it is! The much anticipated “Dreaded Threaded” walkthrough that I have promised all of you. This is by far my favorite and most productive way to bait fish for trout.

I was taught this by Cory Shiozaki, aka “Fear No Trout”, an amazing guide in Northern California, especially Crowley Lake.

I would image that some of you know how to do this and maybe even use this technique often, well, this is not for you. I am writing this walkthrough for all those who are new to the sport, looking for a better way to fish for trout, want to try something different and /or are looking for that one thing that will put them ahead of the pack. This is it! Now this will be directed at shore anglers but not limited to them. Though I feel there are more effective techniques when fishing from a boat, this will definitely work, but it is intended for those resting on the waters edge.

Here are the tools you will need for this technique:

Sum Worms

Da One

A Threader

A Blower

Swivel

Sum Weight

And a hook

So first things first, get yourself a worm threader and a worm blower (pics above). With these two tools, you can turn those wriggly garden dwellers into super bait. They are available at your local tackle store.

Da Toolz (magazine not required)
Image

Taking the threader, insert it into the worm one third of the way up from the bottom of the worm, slide the crawler (or half a crawler) onto it until the end of the threader emerges from the end of the worm. Insert your baitholder hook into the sleeve on the end of the threader and slide the worm onto the hook. Gently poke the point of the hook outside the worm. Taking your worm blower, carefully insert the needle into the bottom 1/3 end of the crawler or into the "collar".

Blow it up
Image

Inflate the worm with a small bubble of air. This will cause the crawler to float, like doughbaits, in the trout's strike zone. Of coarse adding scents to the worm enhance the presentation. And my favorite is Pro-Cure.

Now this is your “Dreaded Threaded”. With this technique you should be into dinner in no time.

Be sure and test the float of your "Dreaded Threaded" before tossing it out for those fat trout. I would also recommend throwing a ½ weight just above your swivel to get it out there to the center of the lake were those big ones lurk.
^Note - you don’t have to use this much weight, but for me I like to try and fish a little farther out then most and in areas that others can’t reach. If the bite happens closer to shore pull up and fish it where they are biting. It does help to fish were the fish are.
I will use anywhere from an 8” to a 2’ leader depending on the conditions and where I feel the fish are at. Test it out. If your not getting bit within a 15min. soak, then pick up, check your bait and change your leader length until you find the right length.
**Additional tip - this can also work under a bobber, just don’t inflate the crawler. From a boat, this technique can be dragged on or near the bottom with great effectiveness.

To all those PETA advocates out there:
*No worms were harmed in the making of this thread.

yea i love using this method to fish with live worms.

it works well for bass as long as you leave more of a tail.

Pro-cure just came out with dyes for bait. Joe's has them on sale right now so I picked up a bottle of chartreuse. I'm not sure if it's the same stuff as Spike-It, but I'm going to try it on soft plastics and see how it works. Unlike Spike-It, there's no nuetralizer so my my fishing clothes will probably have lots of chartreuse spots -- along with my fingers, face, fishing line, tackle box, etc... #-o

Rather than threading, I only hook the worm once through. They live longer that way. Also, I only inflate half of the worm. That way, the bottom half (non-inflated) continues to wiggle. I usually impale the hook right below the inflated portion.

When it's in the water, the worm will be in a vertical position. The inflated part on top; hook in the middle; and non-inflated bottom half wiggling.

The worms will live longer (wiggle) if they have less air in them.

You usually have to cast them very delicately, to prevent the worm from tearing off the hook.

Depending on how much air you pump in, the worm may float all the way to the top if you don't add a sinker. The worm will usually live up to an hour if left alone--but repeated casting will kill them quicker.

Real syringes work better than the inflators because the needle is much smaller and less air leaks out. I asked my pharmacist at Rite-Aid how much one syringe costs and he said they don't sell singles. He then asked what I was going to do with it so I told him. He thought it was a great idea and gave me one for free!

That would be the "B&A" gpc. The "Bow and Arrow". :clown:
Or "The S'o'D" - Stick 'o' Dynamite. :-$

Thanks for the kind words fellas. This took a little longer to put together than I had anticipated, but it is up now. I hope some people get some good use out of this technique.

Well if you know someone who is diabetic you can ask them for a syringe as those work really well and the shorter needle will keep you from hurting yourself too badly....I just dont recommend taking used syringes from them, ask them for a clean one lol.....pharmacies dont sell syringes OTC due to the many IV drug abusers out in the world.

I was eyeballing a threader at Wally World the other day.....thats only cause Joe's is nearly 50 minutes from my house, and Cabella's is even farther, but maybe i should go to White Elephant instead to keep my dollars local.....I guess Im going to have to give a threader a try. You can inject scents this way too.

And Im sure I dont have to go into length about the risks of getting poked when recaping syringes and getting tetanus, especially if you have just used it on a worm.
I dont have ADD its just that, oh look a bunny!

Thanks for bumping that one. This was a great tutorial. You might have always thought, "Hey, it's a worm and a hook, how much can there be to it?" But this kind of maximizes the deal.

here's my 35 cents worth .... you can buy your syringes at your local feed store ... and a longer needle will help ya get the air away from the "hole" ... i use a egg hook ... stick it in right bye the mouth and right bk out again ... thread'n it if you will ... then go down the body and do it again just catch'n the skin/flesh on 1 side .. not go'n all the way through the body .... you can tuck the point bk in or leave it dangle'n ... the red egg hooks have been known to attract panfish to bite smaller worms treated in the same way as above ... dont know that it made any diff on the trouts if they could see the hook or not .... on a big crawler i'll make a couple/few "blisters" of air along the body ... as for stink ... ground anise or some garlic powder in the bedding the worms are in the night before makes 'em stink for a long time !!!! ... i've never try'd color'n 'em but i have spray'd uv spray on 'em ... GL .... DOG
